Tent compliance and test reports

Tent compliance is a set of test reports and labels that match the product and the market where it is sold. Reports are issued to partner factories or to your brand per order and verified by the desk; Pitchmere does not hold certificates of its own. The compliance guide goes into each rule in more depth.

Tent compliance documents: test reports and labels laid beside a folded flame-resistant canopy top

Reports, not badges

There is no single tent certificate. What buyers, marketplaces and fire inspectors ask for are test reports from accredited labs, product labels and, for some products, registrations. A report applies to a specific fabric or model tested on a specific date; it does not cover a different fabric lot, a new colour with a different coating or a changed frame. That is why the desk verifies reports per order rather than relying on a factory's general document folder.

Reports are issued to the partner factory or to your brand. Pitchmere does not hold certificates, does not issue any compliance statement of its own and does not give legal conclusions. Where a rule depends on a state, a fire authority or a customs ruling, confirm it with your test lab, customs broker or local fire authority.

Flame resistance in the US

US flame resistance rules for small camping tents have changed. California's AB 267 removed the chemical treatment requirement for small synthetic camping tents from 1 January 2024, Michigan amended its rule in 2023 and Minnesota in 2024-2025. Some buyers and retailers still ask for flame-resistant fabric tested to CPAI-84, or to ASTM F3431, which has taken over the camping tent part of CPAI-84 and is current as F3431-25. Event tents are different: they usually need fabric tested to NFPA 701 or registered under California CSFM Title 19, and tents above about 400 sq ft generally need a fire permit under the International Fire Code, with state versions varying. A pass to CPAI-84 is not a pass to NFPA 701. The flame resistance note sets this out.

Europe and the UK

For camping tents sold in the EU, buyers ask for testing to EN ISO 5912:2020, the camping tent requirements and test standard. Since 13 December 2024 the General Product Safety Regulation (EU 2023/988) requires an EU responsible person and product identification on the label, and REACH applies to the chemicals in fabrics and coatings. EN 13782 applies to temporary tents above 50 m2. The EU PFHxA restriction for non-apparel textiles applies from 10 October 2027, so buyers who need a fluorine-free DWR option ask for it to be verified by test report. In the UK, marquee fabric is often required to meet BS 7837. See the GPSR note.

UV claims and kids products

UV claims are made only with a report: UPF-rated fabric per AATCC 183 for the US, and AS 4174 UVE for Australia and New Zealand, where UPF wording belongs to clothing. Kids play tents for the US need CPSIA documentation, including ASTM F963 testing and tracking labels, and Canada requires permanent warning labels. See kids play tents.

How the desk handles reports

  1. The desk lists the reports and labels your market needs at the brief stage.
  2. Existing reports from the partner factory are checked for fabric, model, date and lab scope.
  3. Where a report is missing or out of scope, new testing is booked with an accredited lab, issued to the partner factory or to your brand.
  4. Reports are verified per order against the golden sample and the fabric lot, and copies are kept in the order file.

Testing affects lead time, so it is planned with the sample schedule; see MOQ and lead time. Tell us your market and channel through the quote form.

Questions buyers ask

Q01Does Pitchmere hold tent certifications?

No. Test reports are issued by accredited labs to the partner factory or to your brand per order. The desk plans the tests, checks that each report matches the fabric, model and market, and keeps copies in the order file.

Q02Do camping tents sold in the US need flame resistance testing?

It depends on the buyer and the state. California, Michigan and Minnesota have removed or amended their requirements for small camping tents, but some retailers still ask for CPAI-84 or ASTM F3431 reports. Confirm the requirement with your buyer and test lab.

Q03Is a CPAI-84 report enough for an event tent?

Usually not. Event tents generally need fabric tested to NFPA 701 or California CSFM registration, and larger tents need a fire permit. A pass to CPAI-84 is not a pass to NFPA 701; your local fire authority decides what it accepts.

Q04What does GPSR mean for tents sold in the EU?

Since 13 December 2024, consumer products sold in the EU need an EU responsible person and product identification under Regulation 2023/988. Camping tents are commonly tested to EN ISO 5912 as part of the safety file.

Q05Can I claim UPF 50+ for a beach shade in Australia?

In Australia and New Zealand, shade structures are rated under AS 4174 with a UVE figure, so UPF wording is not used in that context. In the US, UPF claims are made per an AATCC 183 test report.

Send the tent types you need, sizes or capacity, fabric and frame preferences, quantity per style and your market. The desk replies in writing with matched factories, a spec sheet, the test reports your market asks for and the reference MOQ.
